A Breath of Fresh Air – Winter 2012

This winter, many of our clients have postnasal drips, sinus headaches & dry coughs. These issues often linger and become bigger problems. What can you do?  More than you think!

Stuck indoors? Poor indoor air quality could be the source of your respiratory problems.   Dust mites, which live in drapes, bedding, mattresses, carpets and upholstery often cause allergic rhinitis.  If possible, machine wash blankets, pillows and drapes at high temperature.  Dust mites cannot survive temperatures above 132º Fahrenheit.  Carpets and upholstery can be professionally cleaned and mattresses can be encapsulated.  Additionally, a good quality HEPA air purifier removes these culprits from the air and can make a huge difference.

Central heat tends to remove moisture from the air and cause irritation to the nose, throat and lungs.  A steam humidifier replaces the lost humidity.  Cold humidifiers can breed bacteria and virus and broadcast them into the air.

Speaking of microorganisms, frequent hand washing with soap and water is an obvious, but important step to stopping infectious diseases.  Also, a premium HEPA air purifier with an activated carbon component will trap and remove most airborne bacteria and viruses.

Sinuses are a perfect breeding ground for bacteria and viruses. One approach to this problem is nasal irrigation.  You can purchase a neti pot (originally from India) or mechanical nasal irrigator (somewhat like a water pik) to help clear the nasal passages and sinuses.

Lastly, chamomile is a natural antihistamine.  One  product which contains chamomile is a nasal ointment from Europe called Kamillosan.  Another natural product which may be  medicinal  is raw honey.  Raw honey contains propolis.  Propolis has been reported to be antiseptic, antibiotic, antibacterial and antifungal.
