Google in court over their ads and a SEO strategy you shouldn’t try at home: Links from around the web, 13 September

Google taken to court over misleading ads and the importance of content post Pengiun/Panda disputed

The Australian Competition and Consumer Commission (ACCC) has taken Google to court arguing that the internet giant engaged in deceptive behaviour regarding their ads. The ACCC has taken issue with the prospect of someone searching for a particular company but an advertisement for a competitor popping up, instead of the desired company. The Federal Court ruled that Google is responsible for the ads because they created and published them. The ACCC has history with bizarre rulings, but this has lead many to scratch their heads. Is Google responsible other businesses ads?

Post Penguin and Panda, the common opinion is that content is now king – Google was successful in their spring clean. Search Engine Watch posted an article that asks if content really deserves that crown. The writer suggests that people should be focusing on the ‘community’ when assessing social and content strategies. It’s a lovely buzzword but does the idea have any legs?

Don’t try this SEO strategy at home, watch out for Clickbombing and GoDaddy’s outage

A Brooklyn man who terrified customers of his online eyewear store has been sent to prison. Vitaly Borker, “scared dissatisfied customers with phone calls and e-mails, in some cases vowing rape, murder or dismemberment” according to the New York Times. When Google was alerted to this they adjusted their algorithm to ensure being bad doesn’t pay off. Probably not the best way to treat your customers.

If you’ve noticed any discrepancies on your Adsense account you might have fallen victim to Clickbombing.  According to Adsense Flippers, Clickbombing is, “a manual or automated process that will go to your site and click through your advertisements at an extremely high rate.” If you’re suddenly experiencing extraordinary amount of traffic or are getting more clicks than page-views you might want to take a look at their guide on what you can do to restore your account.

10 million people were affected by GoDaddy’s recent outage. GoDaddy claims it was an internal error and not an attack from Anonymous, like some claimed.  Some of Flippa’s users were affected by the disruption and GoDaddy has offered compensation.

Avoid the trough of sorrow, PayPal set to improve and iPhone5.com sits dark

You start a new company – you’re excited, but it eventually wears off and you enter a funk. This has been dubbed a “trough of sorrow” by one writer and he’s written a guide on how you can avoid it.

PayPal President David Marcus has signalled a new culture at the company saying, “If we suck at something, we now face it, and we do something about it.” The response came after an unhappy customer took his frustrations to Hacker News. This comes after senior PayPal director, Bill Scott wrote, “Last year when I contemplated joining PayPal it was clear PayPal had long lost its luster as the darling innovator of Silicon Valley.”

and one more thing;

The iPhone 5 announcement has been and gone but iphone5.com is still dead. Apple controversially acquired the domain some time ago but  it doesn’t look like they plan to do anything with it. Yet.
